BT AvaTalk - Free calls and texts trialled in virtual world.

BT AvaTalk

Overview
BT wanted to understand what the demand for virtual-to-real-world communications and also virtual-to-other-virtual-world communication is.

Brief
Clarity International - together with the BT Applied Technology Centre team - was asked to design and develop BT AvaTalk that allows users to easily communicate with friends and family all over the world without leaving their Second Life.

Outcome
Clarity International successfully delivered an innovative multi-media solution on time and budget.
The one month virtual world pilot started on 26 March allowed users to make 10 free calls (of up to one hour each) and send 10 SMS messages to anywhere in the world.
Users were able to use their avatars to access the service at BT phone boxes or by picking up a Heads-Up Display (1) that can then be used in any virtual locations.

BT AvaTalk allowed avatar users to connect two people anywhere in the world using a combination of the following: Traditional land line (PSTN), cellular (Mobile) or softphones (SIP).

BT AvaTalk used BT's global, open, IP platform, Web21C, to carry calls and transmit SMS messages to mobile networks around the world.
We also designed and delivered:

bullet point BT 3D Phone Box

bullet point Heads-Up Display (HUD)

bullet point Call, SMS, Email, Web, and Advertising functionalities

bullet point BT AvaTalk web portal

You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or newer to watch this video.

(1) HUDs or Heads-Up Displays in Second Life are a special form of attachment point. Unlike normal attachment points on the body, they maintain a fixed position on your screen. Only you can see them. Other Residents won't be able to view your HUDs, and vice-versa.
